What Are the Common Tests Performed on Textiles?

Tensile strength tests measure the maximum stress a fabric can withstand before it breaks when stretched.

Raveled strip tests evaluate break force and elongation at break of woven fabrics. Cut strips are common to nonwoven and coated fabrics.

Grab tests are a special test used in the textile industry. Grab tests focus on bulk properties of the fabric by grabbing a central section away from the edges. Grab tests eliminate edge effects that may lead to inaccurate results. Our grips feature special grab jaw insert made in accordance with standard tests.

Tear tests, there are two common tear tests:

Tongue tear test measures the force required to propagate a tear through a fabric starting from a cut.

Trapezoid tear test determines tear resistance. It employs a trapezoidal-shaped sample.

Puncture resistance tests measure the force required for a probe to puncture the fabric, indicating resistance to penetration by defined standardized probes.

Burst strength tests uses similar test fixtures to measure the force required to rupture a fabric. They apply pressure over a defined area.

Seam strength tests determines whether the seam is strong enough to use.

Cantilever bend tests measure a fabric's stiffness and resistance to bending by testing a strip of fabric under its own weight and measuring the angle of deflection.

Fastener strength tests ensure that buttons, zippers, and snaps remain securely attached.

Adhesion of coating tests are for coated fabrics that measures the bond strength between the coating and the base fabric. The test applies a peeling force to a prepared sample and measures the force required to separate the coating.
